The DCMS has launched another consultation to find out the extent of problem leases. The Department says it’s committed to reforming the leasehold market so it is fairer and more transparent, and provides greater choice for home-owners adding “We are keen to hear from existing leaseholders with onerous leases where, for example, ground rents double every ten years.”
What emerged from last year’s leasehold scandal is that the government had NO IDEA what was happening. And it’s important they hear about flats as well as leasehold houses. So if you have a ground rent that increases over time, either doubling or inflation-linked, please drop a quick email to onerouslease@communities.gsi.gov.uk by 15 June. More information at Leasehold Knowledge.
PS if you’ve been overcharged for permission, or insurance, or terrorism cover, send a note about that too. Onerous is quite a broad term! They won’t respond to each email but may be in touch for further information.
